N.A.S.C. / OMHA COACH MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Inaugural Meeting
Wednesday, February 6th - 7:30pm / Valleyview Community Centre

N.A.S.C. Hockey will be holding its inaugural Coach Mentorship meeting Wednesday, February 6th at 7:30pm at the Valleyview Community Centre.

Guest Speaker will feature Mr. Chris DePiero - Assistant GM/Associate Coach, Oshawa Generals Hockey Club with the focus being practice planning and preparation.

N.A.S.C. Hockey is pleased to announce starting in the 2007/2008 season, a partnership with OMHA in offering all of our N.A.S.C. registered coaches, a structured coaches' mentorship program. The focus of N.A.S.C. Hockey is to better prepare the "grassroots" level hockey player with the tools they need to enjoy the game.

Our instruction programs for the kids are "second to none" and are offered nowhere else. Now that we've taken care of the kids, it is time to provide our volunteer coaches the tools to help them succeed, and is a continuation of the focus of our hockey program.

N.A.S.C. Hockey will be offering all (4) four OMHA specialty clinics as a compliment to the mentorship program being introduced for the 2007/2008 hockey season.

Program Overview

The Hockey Canada National Coach Mentorship Program (NCMP) is a Hockey Canada initiative developed in response in response to the 1999 Molson Open Ice Summit on player development in Canada with the following direction:

  • It was felt the key to developing players was good coaching.
  • “Create a system of mentor/master coaches for every minor hockey association……
  • Attempt to fill the gap between coaches clinics and the practical reality of coaching
  • Mentorship needs to be voluntary and “coach driven”

Mentoring can provide coaches with much needed skills, knowledge, and support to promote and sustain an improved level of coaching performance. A minor hockey association mentorship program can also foster an improved level of recruitment and retention of community coaches. As a result, coaching becomes more enjoyable, and in the end, everyone benefits – particularly the players.

Regional Development Contacts

The OMHA is pleased to announce the appointment of seven Regional Development Contacts across the OMHA whose role is two-fold:

  1. Act as the development contact for all development initiatives in the region.
  2. Act as a direct liaison with all associations within the region and support them in implementing development initiatives.
Regional Development Contacts will also ‘mentor’ associations on implementing programs in their associations such as the creation of a development philosophy for their association and the implementation of OMHA Development Programs such as the Initiation Program, Coach Mentorship, Specialty Clinics, Skill Testing.
