CLICK
HERE for pictures of our Hockey School!
Our learn hockey programs are so well received, they're "often
imitated, never duplicated" .
We pride ourselves in being the first and
the leader in Oshawa in "grassroots" hockey development.
Now featuring Scary Skate as our lead team of
instructors!

Novice 4 & 5 – Focused Instruction
For a child who is just getting started, having fun and learning the basics
is the key to building confidence. In order to satisfy both areas, N.A.S.C.
Hockey is pleased to announce the addition of Scary Skate as our lead
instructors to its offering. All at
NO additional cost to participants!
Once weekly, all participants aged 4 and 5 years old will enjoy the benefit
of having “certified” professional instruction in addition to their regular
program. The focus of the program will be as follows:
* Lots of activity going on
* Using your whole ice surface
*Focusing on the basic skills
*Skating
*Passing
*Shooting
*Puck Skills
Every session will include 25 minutes of skating instruction followed by 25
minutes of Puck Orientated skills with 2 senior and 2 junior instructors per
session. WE DO NOT do full hour power skating sessions as we believe the puck
should be on their stick every practice.
Structure
The teams are formed from registered players with up to max. 15 players
per team.
Session Format
The ice surface will be broken into three sections. Temporary foam construction,
removable boards will divide the ice and will make the ice surface size more
appropriate to the size of the players using it. This reduction in ice size also
facilitates more control and provides a better suited instructor-to-student
ratio.
Three teams at a time will utilize this new ice format for the Hockey School.
Regardless of team, all players will be assessed on their ability and they will
be assigned into the appropriate section for their ability. Beginner -
Intermediate - Advanced. By assigning the players into their appropriate ability
category, this will also provide a better suited, specified instruction to
assist those players and over the course of the season, this will allow all players
to achieve their potential.
Each team will be allowed a maximum of 3 Coaches/Helpers on ice per
session.
However, during the first month of the
program, we invite more on-ice help until the kids are working on their own
ability.
It is important to please pre-select these
coaches/helpers prior to the sessions to avoid confusion at the rink.

25 minutes skills, 5 min re-affirming last class, 20 min new skill
2 of our Instructors, Minimum 1 coach per team.
Session Preparation
Each day the coaches can find a copy of today’s lesson plans on a clip
board by the Home Bench. Please review the lesson plan when you arrive at the
rink so you have an idea what we are doing.
The Letter “C” means coach on the lesson plan and the letter “I” means
instruction. This is so we know where each of us should be placed during a drill
for DOC purposes.
DOC = Demonstrate, Observe & Correct with Correcting being the key of
course.
The sessions will focus on the following skills over the 20 weeks..
- Basic Forward Stride, 4 sessions
- Stopping Skills, 6 sessions
- Passing Skills, 6 sessions
- Forward Crossovers, 5 session
- Basic Backwards Stride, 4 session
- Shooting Skills, 4 sessions
NOVICE 4 & 5 HOCKEY PROGRAM
GUIDELINES
Program Focus
The focus is to concentrate on the players learning the skills of the game.
Scrimmages are for the moms and dads.
Structure
The teams are formed from registered players with up to 14 players per team.

boards will divide the ice and will make the ice surface size more appropriate
to the size of the players using it. This reduction in ice size also facilitates
more control and provides a better suited instructor-to-student ratio.

Once the teams are formed, the convener will hold a coaches meeting to
outline how the division will operate throughout the year. All coaching staff
need to understand the OMHA requirements and need to be aware of the coach's,
trainer, and PRS (Speak Out) clinics which are required. Coaching staff
accompany the kids on the ice during practices and a coach also accompanies the
kids during game play to assist.
Ice time is scheduled and practices are held each week until approximately 2
weeks before the Christmas tournament. The ice is usually resurfaced every
second hour as it is not necessary to do so after every hour and it also allows
extra time for teaching and warm up. The last two weeks before Christmas, games
are held so that the players can be taught positioning and face offs and to
introduce the kids to having a referee on the ice. When there are games, the
regular scrimmage guidelines are followed in terms of face offs and what to do
when a goal is scored or when the goalie freezes the puck.
The league supplies Tim Hortons "timbits" jerseys, socks, pylons
and blue 4oz. pucks in which to teach the kids. We have also assembled a handy
"Hockey
Drills" package that you can download as a guide to help to refresh
even a veteran coach!
At the end of the season, all players are treated to a pizza party and are
presented with a "gift bag" and a trophy. All team pictures are also
provided to each team included with registration and at no additional cost.
Game Play
Controlled scrimmages are around and after Christmas. There is never a score on the
scoreboard at any time. The clock is set to buzz every 3 minutes (usually by the
convener) for the amount of time allowed (i.e. - 48 minutes, and the players
play on) There is a face off at the beginning of the scrimmage and after every
3-minute buzzer. If the goalie stops the puck, it is picked up by one of the
coaches on the ice and thrown into the neutral zone. There should be one coach
from each team on the ice, who is wearing a helmet with the chinstrap done up at
all times. Coaches should be aware of body contact and children who fall down as
a method of puck recovery.
Continued Follow-Up
At the beginning of the second half of the season (after the Christmas break)
there will be a second coaches meeting in January to evaluate the kids' progress
and how to proceed for the second half of the season.
(i.e. - one week game or 20 minute practice before each scrimmage, etc.)
